DEWALT DW960K-2 Cordless Right Angle Drill

The Dewalt DW960K-2 is a cordless right angle drill powered by an 18 volt NI Cad battery. The Nickel cadmium batteries provide great power and are a fast recharge however they lack the "charge anytime" capability of the Lithium Ion battery packs. To extend the life of a NI Cad battery it should be fully discharged before recharging.

A tip for shopping this drill is that it comes form most online outlets with two batteries as standard while in most stores it only comes with one battery. So when doing price comparisons remember to check for the batteries. The 2 in the serial signifies 2 batteries.

The Dewalt DW960K-2 cordless is just as capable of drilling 3 inch holes in joisting as 3/4 inch holes for water pipe under a sink in a kitchen cabinet. It is so easy to handle weighing in at less than 10 pounds and grinding out 300 inch/pounds of torque in low speed mode with a handy variable speed trigger and available reverse mode.

Do a Cordless Drill Comparison Before Buying a Drill Driver As a Gift

I want to give a cordless drill driver as a present. Before buying the new tool I will do a cordless drill comparison to make sure the recipient gets a drill driver that meets his needs. I have been looking at cordless power tool combo kits and saw that one of the major differences in cordless drill drivers is the battery. I decided that the first part of my cordless drill comparison would be to take as look at what makes a lithium ion (Li-ion) battery different than a Nicad battery.

12 Volt Lithium Battery

For this cordless drill comparison I decided that the chemical properties weren't important to me. What mattered was why an Li-ion battery may be better than a nicad battery. My drill comparison came up with 2 major reasons. Li-ion batteries weight is about half that of a nicad battery. In other words when you hold a 18 volt lithium ion powered cordless drill driver over your head you will notice a major difference in the weight over that of a 18 volt nicad drill driver.

12 Volt Lithium Battery

This cordless driver comparison showed that Lithium-ion batteries hold a charge a lot longer than a nicad battery. A fully charged Lithium-ion batteries can hold a charge for up to a year. My cordless driver comparison did clarify to me that when comparing drivers its important to compare cordless drivers with similar power. Power wise a 12 volt Nicad battery has the same power as a 12 volt Lithium ion battery and a 18 volt nicad battery has the same power as a 18 volt Li-ion battery. So don't expect the same torque found in a 18 volt nicad cordless drver from a new 12 volt li-ion cordless driver.

My drill comparison showed many drills are now listed as drill drivers instead of just a cordless drill. Cordless drivers have a clutch. The clutch controls the amount of torque applied. When the preset resistance has been reached It disengages the drill driver's drive shaft making a clicking sound. By setting the clutch correctly you won't strip a screw or overdrive it once it's snug. So its important to pay attention to the clutch settings so you are able to take advantage of clutch and not strip the screws. Also, part of my cordless driver comparison is also to check the number of clutch settings each drill driver has.

My cordless driver comparison also revealed that most cordless drill drivers have keyless chucks that are tightened by hand, no chuck key to loose. Keyless chucks are usually 3/8 inch or 1/2 inch. This drill comparison also revealed some consumer level cordless drill drivers have keyless chucks that only take quick connect bits. So since I'm buying the cordless driver as a gift I'm making sure what type of bits the recipient uses.

I concluded through this cordless drill comparison that the most important feature to consider is how the drill feels in your hand. Does the drill point straight ahead without tipping up or down? Is it too heavy working overhead? Since the drill I'm buying is a gift I'm checking return policies before I buy, especially if I'm buying online.

Besides helping me discover what cordless drill to buy as a gift, my cordless driver comparison helped me to better understand my tool. I now know how and why to use the clutch settings and am now taking the time to set it correctly.

Buying a Lithium Drill

Lithium drills are really making an impact on the cordless tool market, and with good reason. Lithium drills offer the power we all want, with the weight savings and run time that we need to make a cordless drill work for us.

All of the major tool maker have a lithium drill available now, so you have many to chose from. I never tell my contractors what color tool they like, I just give them the pros and cons of the brands I sell and let them chose their favorite. This article will give you some info on lithium drills that will hopefully help you make a good decision and understand some of the traits of lithium drills.

12 Volt Lithium Battery

Lithium batteries are very different from the NiCad and NIMH batteries you have used in the past. They can pack a lot more energy in a smaller package and understanding what they can and can't do in a lithium drill may save you some frustration.

One of the cool features of a lithium drill is that the drill maintains it's power until the battery is drained then it just quits. With this in mind, if you get to the site and your battery is dead, if you charge it for 5-10 minutes, you will have full power (I said full power, not full run time. You need the full charge for both!). This is a great trait of the lithium drill and many trades and service techs will benefit from this feature.

A lithium drill is much lighter than a comparable drill of the same voltage. This allows you to use higher voltage tools with lighter weight. Remember, voltage equals power, mah equals the gas tank of the battery. So, if you are using a 12 volt now, a 18 volt or even a 36 volt lithium drill will offer you much more power and still have the same run time of you 12 volt with close to the same weight.

What is the down side of a lithium drill? The first thing that always comes to mind is cost. The good news is as more and more lithium drills hit the market, the cost is dropping. One other thing inherent to lithium drills is problems that can occur in cold weather. Lithium batteries don't like a large demand (load) in very cold weather. If you live a colder climate, you will need to warm up the batteries. It may be as simple as putting the battery in your pocket or just slowly running the drill with no load until the "juice" gets flowing. Knowing this going in will save you a lot of frustration with your new lithium drill.

Many people think that new battery technology is just planned obsolescence to get you to buy a new tool. Think that if you will, but the new lithium drills really are in a class in themselves compared to the NiCad and NIMH tools. Older DeWalt tools can actually use the new lithium batteries in them.

If you are in the market for a new cordless drill, consider a lithium drill. The pricing is going down, the performance is going up.

12-volt cordless drills are a popular choice in the do-it-yourself handyman market segment. While drills rated 14 volts to 18 volts are recommended for frequent and heavy use, 12-volt drills are just right for occasional weekend fix-its.

One of the top choices professionals consider when it comes to 12-volt drills is Skil. Skil is an industry leader and highly-respected brand among power tools. The company was founded in 1924 by circular saw inventor, Edmond Michel. In 1996, Skil was sold to the top European tools manufacturer, Bosch. Skil 2466-02

The Skil 2466-02 is the only 2009 model that made it to the 2010 catalog. This reversible drill is a variable single speed that goes up to 700 RPM on zero load. It also uses 3/8-inch drill bits but it has a bit size indicator for easy bit-to-screw size matching. The drill also has a battery charge meter.

Skil 2467-02 (discontinued)

The 2467-02 is discontinued model that is still widely-available from retailers because of its popularity and availability. Although discontinued, this model is not a bit outdated and therefore might be a popular choice for those on a tight budget. It is a 3/8-inch drill with 6 torque settings. Use only a reliable and highly sophisticated type of anti-malware software. This should prevent the computer hardware problem from stopping the battery and stopping the power adapter from sending electrical power (AC or DC to the lithium-ion battery in the laptop).

If this problem is not solved soon, it will continue to bring on a process for both consumers and businesses to suffer higher cost than what most laptop users, technicians, distributors, and manufactures realize. When the lithium-ion battery charging process is stopped and false indicator displays lead to replacing laptop lithium-ion batteries, think again folks.

When malware occurs after standard 1-year warranty expiration (on relatively new laptop computers) as well as with extended warranty plans wherein lithium-ion batteries are continually being replaced because of resultant lack of malware capability knowledge driving associated costs higher. The following should occur:

1. Warranty product adjustments creating both unnecessary labor and shipping costs (expended by vendor and manufacturer); and...

2. As was written above consumer product replacement retrievals costs (expending consumer transportation costs to vendor or shipping facility); and, businesses and home-office businesses) will be affected.

Studying the aforementioned 'full picture' demonstrates how particular types of incredibly sophisticated malware alone increases unnecessary costs associated with lithium-ion battery disruptions when only an expensively stupid replacement option is made.

Actual Malware Event (Brief) -

EmiSoft anti-malware program, known as "a2 Personal" (circa: 14JAN11), detected' and allowed removal of a highly specific form of malware. This result caused a relatively new Hewlett-Packard Compaq Presario CQ60 laptop computer from working. The system is (equipped with current updates for its Microsoft Windows 7 Premium operating system program as well as its Microsoft Security Essentials anti-malware and anti-virus application program). The effect will render its lithium-ion battery and charging display to indicate the lithium battery was low (12%) -requiring charging. This simultaneously causing the laptop to silently reject alternating current (A-C) electrical power (110-Volt) having always been used to recharge the laptop battery within the laptop computer.

EmiSoft a2 Personal anti-malware and anti-virus application program located the malware as residing within the Hewlett-Packard factory created folder entitled "C:\HP\Bin" where specifically that malware file was identified using the file name "EndProcess.exe" containing malware identified by EmiSoft a2 Personal as "Riskware.Win32.KillApp! A2" whereupon after the malware infected file was removed the Compaq Presario CQ60 laptop lithium battery resumed normal charging from the electrical power source as well as properly displaying the battery mode as "charging" rather than "not charging." The EmiSoft "a2 Personal" anti-malware and anti-virus report records the aforementioned encountered problem (below).
